The total number of road traffic fatalities during 2018 was 18, one fatality less than in the preceding year. The most significant amount of road traffic casualties involved passenger cars (59.3%), followed by motorcycles (29.9%) and goods-carrying vehicles (6.7%), the NSO says. Four cyclists were hit by passenger cars, and another cyclist was hit by a goods-carrying vehicle.

The highest number of road traffic accidents was registered in Birkirkara (354 cases), followed by Marsa (186) and Ħal Qormi (173).

A total of 1,599 people were involved in non-fatal accidents at work in the last six months of 2018, the NSO reports citing administrative records. The manufacturing sector saw the highest number of these accidents, amounting at 282 (17.6% of the total). Another 233 (14.6%) accidents occurred in the construction sector, while 228 (14.3%) accidents took place in the transport and storage industries.

Although the number of accidents decreased by 33 in accommodation and food service activities in H2 2018, as compared to the same period a year earlier, the administration and support service activities saw an increase of 20.

Some 33.8% of the accidents at work took place in enterprises with more than 500 employees, 12% happened in enterprises with 250-499 employees, 25.4% took place in enterprises with 50-249 employees, 14.7% occurred in enterprises with 10-49 employees, 8.4% took place in enterprises with 1-9 employees and 4.6% happened to the self-employed.

The number of non-fatal accidents per 100,000 employed people was reported at 1,400. Three fatal accidents at work were recorded in H2 2018 in total, while no deadly accidents took place in the same period a year earlier.

Data on non-fatal accidents at work is provided by the Department of Social Security, while the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) gives that on fatal accidents at work, the NSO says in the methodological notes.
