The Malta Hospice Movement has received a €115,000 donation from Farsons Foundation, Farrugia Investments and Multigas Limited for the establishment of the St Michael Hospice complex, according to a press release sent to Business Malta. The funding is available for a three-year period.

The latest donation by Farsons includes the building and furnishing of the in-patient kitchen and dining facilities for the patients and their families. The hospice offers free service to patients in Malta and Gozo and it has been doing a lot for suffering families, according to the press release.

Hospice Malta believes that the funding will help enhance community services. The St Michael complex will also represent an in-patient care unit with a more holistic approach offering more therapy services and out-patient clinics. Furthermore, the hospice will strengthen its educational centre, allowing relations with hospices across Europe and beyond, as the press release says.

“St Michael Hospice project has the potential to make an immense difference in the community. Many Maltese have family members who have relied on the specialist care offered by Hospice Malta. Through this donation, we can support Hospice Malta to broaden its remarkable work for the benefit of the Maltese society,” said Louis A. Farrugia, Chairman on behalf of Farsons and its affiliates.

“We have embarked on a journey to fund this project that will see Malta’s first hospice complex become a reality and I would like to thank Farsons and its affiliates for their support. Being an NGO, and with all our services offered free of charge, we critically rely on voluntary donations to continue with our care,“ said Maria Gatt, Chairperson of Hospice Malta.

“This is possible thanks to the generosity of individuals and businesses to enable our operations to continue serving those who need them most. Through this donation towards St Michael Hospice, Farsons and its affiliates responded in a tangible manner to help our future patients receive the best possible care,” Mrs Gatt added.

Hospice Malta provides and promotes palliative care to people suffering from cancer, motor-neuron disease, end-of-life cardiac, respiratory, renal and liver disease. St Michael is a hospice previously called Adelaide Cini Institute. It is located in Santa Venera and was founded in 1989, representing the first complex in Malta which provides comprehensive palliative care to patients.

The post Malta Hospice Movement receives €115,000 donation first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

HSBC Bank Malta will donate €1 for every download of its new mobile app — capped at a maximum of €20,000 — to Nature Trust Malta, according to a press statement sent to Business Malta. Funds raised this way will be used to plant 2,000 new trees in 2020.

HSBC says its new app helps to streamline money transfers and also supports biometric login, such as Touch ID and Face ID for Apple and Fingerprint ID for compatible Android devices. Alternatively, users can use a six-digit PIN for logging in.

“We have decided to link the launch of our new app to an important local initiative which will see us donate up to €20,000 to Nature Trust Malta. In this way, anyone who downloads and uses the new app will also be supporting the environment,” said Dan Robinson, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management.

The mobile app uses up-to-date encryption technology, and allows users to view account details and balances, see their transfer history, as well as can transfer between their own accounts, pay a third-party account with HSBC Malta, pay a third-party account within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and also make payments to companies.

Nevertheless, for third-party transactions, the payees must first be set up through the bank’s personal internet banking platform.

The post HSBC Malta to donate up to €20,000 for planting trees first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

Nestlé donated €35,000 to the Nescafé Life Cycle Challenge, supporting a new research programme of kidney disease at the University of Malta with €25,000, and helping the Renal Unit Support Health Hub (RUSH) with €10,000, according to a press release sent to Business Malta.

“Being associated with such a dynamic organisation, we appreciate not only the balance in life through sports, but also the contribution which sports can give to society and especially those in need,” said Giuliana Isolani, Nestlé Country Manager.

“We, at Nestlé, are fully convinced of the supporting role that our most loved coffee brand by the Maltese population, Nescafé, could have in achieving goals for a good cause. May this be only the start of a long journey together,” Ms Isolani added.

The Nescafé 3in1 LifeCycle Challenge 2019 will take 27 cyclists through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Sponsored by Nestlé’s Nescafé 3in1 for two consecutive years, the challenge will take place between 12 and 21 September. The cyclists and support team will fly from Malta on 9 September and will arrive back home on 24 September.

“Simply called Nescafé 3in1 LifeCycle Challenge owing to the three South East Asian countries we are visiting; the cyclists will travel almost 2,000 km in 10 days. The landscape in Vietnam is of rich vegetation and long climbs while in Laos and Cambodia we will see long distances through remote villages, following the Mekong Delta, The finish is at one of the world’s greatest wonders, the iconic Angkor Wat,” said LifeCycle Founder Alan Curry during a press conference yesterday.

“The temperature is expected to be 30 degrees plus, with humidity levels over 90%. Sleeping will be in tents. When we use the word “challenge”, we really mean daring… and certainly not for the faint-hearted,” Mr Curry continued.

“It is inspiring to see so many people coming together to give their time, money and expertise in the service of others. Entrepreneurs and our private sector form the backbone of this country. When they harness their abilities and channel this towards social and environmental good, the whole community can only benefit,” said Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Businesses Christian Cardona.

Helping those who suffer

LifeCycle Malta Foundation is a non-profit organization (NGO) that raises money to support patients suffering from kidney failure and covers the areas of awareness, treatment and research. In order to achieve these goals, the foundation collaborates with the medical staff at the Renal Unit of Mater Dei Hospital and the University of Malta Research Trust (RIDT).

LifeCycle has supported the needs of kidney disease patients and their families for the past 20 years, furthering also awareness of organ transplants in Malta in collaboration with the Transplant Support Group.

Moreover, the foundation set up last November a new project called Renal Unit Support Health Hub (RUSH) in order to offer a comprehensive support network for patients.

The money collected each year from various businesses and individuals goes towards the needs of kidney disease patients at the Renal Unit, including the yearly support for “Traccia” software, which facilitates the procedure of finding the right match for renal patient compatible with a kidney donor, as the press release sent to BM says.

In addition, the RUSH project pays for psychological support to approximately 300 kidney patients and kidney donors, offering also free fitness sessions to renal patients undergoing dialysis treatment.

Qatar Airways has donated its “selfie bench” to Hospice Malta. The bench is now in the garden of the new 9,000 sqm residential palliative care facility, currently known as the Adelaide Cini Institute, according to a press statement sent to Business Malta. The facility is set to begin receiving patients by 2021.

The branded bench was used in Qatar Airways’ social media campaign supporting its recent launch of the Malta-Doha route in June.

“Qatar Airways fully understands and embraces the importance of supporting charities and their vital work in the local community,” said Mate Hoffmann, Qatar Airways Country Manager Italy and Malta. “We strongly believe in coming together to support Hospice Malta with such a worthy cause, and are thrilled that our famous ‘selfie’ bench will continue to bring comfort and cheer to the people of Malta in its new home,” the country manager added.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the donation which was dropped off last week,” said Kenneth Delia, Hospice Malta General Manager. The bench will offer our day therapy patients the opportunity for respite and comfort in our tranquil garden space. It is a fantastic initiative on the part of Qatar Airways and we could not be happier to be chosen as the airline’s charity of choice,” the general manager added.

Hospice Malta is a voluntary organisation that offers its services free of charge through a multidisciplinary team of professionals and volunteers, providing and promoting palliative care for those suffering from terminal conditions. The patient-centred palliative care offered targets the relief of pain and other physical symptoms, as well as emotional, psycho-social, and spiritual issues.

The post Qatar Airways donates ‘selfie’ bench to Hospice Malta first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.
