The Malta Hospice Movement has received a €115,000 donation from Farsons Foundation, Farrugia Investments and Multigas Limited for the establishment of the St Michael Hospice complex, according to a press release sent to Business Malta. The funding is available for a three-year period.

The latest donation by Farsons includes the building and furnishing of the in-patient kitchen and dining facilities for the patients and their families. The hospice offers free service to patients in Malta and Gozo and it has been doing a lot for suffering families, according to the press release.

Hospice Malta believes that the funding will help enhance community services. The St Michael complex will also represent an in-patient care unit with a more holistic approach offering more therapy services and out-patient clinics. Furthermore, the hospice will strengthen its educational centre, allowing relations with hospices across Europe and beyond, as the press release says.

“St Michael Hospice project has the potential to make an immense difference in the community. Many Maltese have family members who have relied on the specialist care offered by Hospice Malta. Through this donation, we can support Hospice Malta to broaden its remarkable work for the benefit of the Maltese society,” said Louis A. Farrugia, Chairman on behalf of Farsons and its affiliates.

“We have embarked on a journey to fund this project that will see Malta’s first hospice complex become a reality and I would like to thank Farsons and its affiliates for their support. Being an NGO, and with all our services offered free of charge, we critically rely on voluntary donations to continue with our care,“ said Maria Gatt, Chairperson of Hospice Malta.

“This is possible thanks to the generosity of individuals and businesses to enable our operations to continue serving those who need them most. Through this donation towards St Michael Hospice, Farsons and its affiliates responded in a tangible manner to help our future patients receive the best possible care,” Mrs Gatt added.

Hospice Malta provides and promotes palliative care to people suffering from cancer, motor-neuron disease, end-of-life cardiac, respiratory, renal and liver disease. St Michael is a hospice previously called Adelaide Cini Institute. It is located in Santa Venera and was founded in 1989, representing the first complex in Malta which provides comprehensive palliative care to patients.

The post Malta Hospice Movement receives €115,000 donation first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

Arts Council Malta — overseen by Ministry for Justice, Culture and Local Government — awarded a €5,000 fund to 28 fireworks factories each to improve safety practices in pyrotechnics, according to a press statement by the government’s Department of Information (DOI). The funding scheme is running for the second year.

“This fund is a clear example of how this Government is committed to strengthening our traditions and customs, which form an intrinsic part of our identity,” said Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Owen Bonnici during the ceremony.

“Through such a project we are not only making this aspect of our culture more accessible, but we are also safeguarding this tradition, whilst also ensuring the safety of the volunteers who are creating these formidable works of art,” the minister added.

The fund provides each fireworks factory with the opportunity to improve its infrastructure so that volunteers are given a safe working environment both during manufacture and during the lighting up of the fireworks. Through this fund, the factories can also invest in resources which will aid them in improving the quality of the local pyrotechnic product and its security, the DOI press statement says.

“The Malta Arts Council is making a strong statement through this fund – that the Council believes in the safety and art of our firework workers and the safety of their workplace,” said Albert Marshall, the Chairman of Arts Council Malta.

Each fireworks factory will also receive a First Aid Box to install in the factory, and a member of the factory is to attend for a First Aid Course organised by the Malta Red Cross in collaboration with Arts Council Malta.

The post Fireworks factories receive €5,000 fund each first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

Blockchain-based health tech firm Kinect entered a partnership with Kamari, a multi-country project for mobile gaming, online casino and lotteries to fund and promote new HIV testing programmes in many countries across the African continent within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a press statement. Kinect and Kamari entered into a US$2.5m coin swap to fund the initiative.

Both Kinect and Kamari share involvement in Africa aspects; the prior works closely together with ministries of health and large global charities across Africa, while the latter has licenses in over seven African countries.

The two companies proposed the establishment of a multi-country lottery to motivate untested men between the ages of 18 and 34 to undergo an HIV test at participating clinics with the goal of promoting education and treatment for infected people. The partnership focuses on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“HIV infection is a serious issue in many African countries and the ongoing spread of the disease by untested individuals has been incredibly difficult to address” said Toby Carroll, the Chairman of Kinect. “We believe that this partnership with Kamari and the proposed lottery to incentivise those untested individuals to take their first test, will lead to increased education, treatment and hopefully reduce the spread of the disease,” he added.

“Africa will be a multi-currency universe creating benefit and liquidity to all from the unbanked to the commercially astute,” added Dr. Christopher Cleverly, the CEO of Kamari. “Kinect has a model that will thrive on an interoperable platform of shared values created through collaboration. This will be a game changer for medical data and application on the continent,” the professional added.

Since 2016 Kinect has collected US$5.75m to help the successful expansion of business development across Africa and other emerging economies with the greatest need.

Kinect recently formed a partnership with ZEU Crypto networks and its Canadian Stock Exchange listed company, St Georges Eco-Mining to develop its private blockchain that can integrate with major platforms including Cardano and EOS. ZEU Crypto Networks is investing US$2.45m into Kinect to enable development and expansion in existing operations, according to the press statement.
