Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hudson Group Ltd for offering students exposure to the retail sector, opening up space for training in the industry, according to a press statement by MCAST.

Beyond the Advanced Diploma in Fashion and Retail training offered by the MCAST Institute of Creative Arts, the educational institution believes formal education stands on weak legs related to retail careers. Nevertheless, the retail industry is one of the leading employers in Malta, MCAST notes.

In the framework of the recently signed cooperation, the two bodies will provide students with theoretical and practical training. Hudson Group employees will support the development of the current curriculum and will run lectures and workshops for the MCAST students in some retail-related fields, the press statement says. Apprenticeship possibilities will be offered for students on an annual basis, to expand their knowledge by providing work experience.

“The retail industry offers many interesting career opportunities with many exciting roles in areas such as brand management, retail store management, visual merchandising, planning and buying, and marketing among others. Being a major player in the retail and distribution industry in Malta and the Mediterranean region, we feel we are an ideal partner to support MCAST in its mission to bridge the skills gap and prepare their students for employment in the industry” says Alfie Borg, Hudson Group CEO.

Hudson Group is an international retailer and distributor primarily involved in the sport and fashion wear sectors, headquartered in Malta, present through offices in Italy, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. “Though Hudson Holdings was founded in 2006, the group’s roots reach as far back as 1987 when the first pair of Nike was sold in Malta,” Hudson says.

In Malta, Hudson Group represents sports brands such as Nike, Converse, Timberland, Crocs, Eastpak, New Era plus franchisees of GoSport from France. They own franchise concepts, such as Urban Jungle and House of Sport, across Malta, as well as operate the stores of New Look, River Island, United Colors of Benetton, 3INA and Kiabi. Internationally, the group currently has a direct retail presence in European and African countries as well as a distribution base covering over 30 territories.

The post MCAST teams up with Hudson in retail training first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

As the Maltese aviation industry has recently been on an upward curve, Malta Enterprise and MCAST are launching a campaign for promoting jobs in the sector, according to a press statement sent to <g class="gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-del replaceWithoutSep" id="3" data-gr-id="3">Business</g> Malta.

The growing aviation industry has attracted the attention of both local and foreign investors, the press statement says. Job vacancies in the sector are hiking, especially for technicians. Grappling on the most recent trends, Malta Enterprise, a government agency responsible for supporting economic growth, and Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), a vocational education and training institution in Malta, partnered up to promote the aviation technician career path as a solid option for the youth at the beginning of their education.MCAST already offers specific courses for technicians within the aviation sector; specifically in maintenance, repair and overhaul. Enrollment for new classes is opening up in February. For further information, visit the official website of MCAST.

The courses on offer require Ordinary Level (O-Level) standard of education; however, Foundation Courses are available for candidates who currently do not meet the entry requirements.

“The campaign is one of the initiatives that Malta Enterprise carries out to support and stimulate economic growth, job creation and further training of the workforce,” the press statement says.

The aviation industry has been experiencing rapid growth worldwide, chiefly fuelled by booming tourism industries, readily available flights thanks to low-fare airlines, and an increasingly globalised economy. The middle-class expansion has also contributed to the popularisation of air travel, according to an analysis put out by Oxford Business Group. Aircraft manufacturer giant Boeing forecasts an additional 41,000 plane deliveries by 2036.

The global trend is highly visible in Malta, too. Malta Airport’s traffic in 2018 reached 6,808,177, which is a 13.2% growth as compared to the preceding year. Calculating with a further 5.8% growth for 2019, Malta Airport expects to break the glass ceiling of 7.2 million passengers by the end of the year.
