140,723 employees currently receive less than the median wage and 2,642 employees in Malta receive the minimum wage, according to information by the Labour Force Survey (LFS).
Answering a parliamentary question made by PN MP Ivan Castillo, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana provided the information on workers who receive less than the median wage and those who receive minimum wage. The amount does not include supplementary incomes such as overtime, bonuses or allowances.
The number of employees includes those who work full-time, part-time and full-time with reduced hours.
123,713 employees received an average annual basic salary of €20,436 on a full-time basis, whilst 17,748 employees received an average annual basic salary of €10,838 on a part-time basis.
The number of employees working full-time who received the minimum wage in 2021 was 2,642.
