2023: Malta the only EU country that will serve as a non-permanent member of the UNSC

In 2023, Malta, together with France, which is a permanent member, will be an important and essential voice of the European Union on the United Nations Security Council. This was noted during the European Union Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States.

During his intervention, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg claimed that this meeting, at such a critical time, is an important opportunity showcasing how the European Union will be communicating its actions with the rest of the world. “As Malta, we fully believe in the principles of the United Nations and furthermore, as members of the United Nations Security Council, are committed to continue pushing forward the values of peace and security”, explained Ian Borg.

The minister explained that the European Union needs to remain united during these moments because that is the biggest advantage. This is despite the fact that a deep analysis of what is happening and how this can be communicated in the best possible way without the possibility of European citizens suffering from economic, social and even cultural crises should be carried out. Ian Borg went on to say that in light of the assistance that Ukraine needs, it would be wise for the European Union to ensure the sustainability of this assistance. He also claimed that it would be wise if the European Union engages in dialogue with the Russian community, particularly the one that is against the war, because they are equally an essential part of the narrative against those who are supporting and financing these barbaric acts we are witnessing.
