72% of people in Malta used social networks in 2020 – Eurostat

72% of people in Malta aged 16-74 participated in social networks in 2020, according to a survey conducted by Eurostat in the first quarter of that year.

This places Malta well above the EU average of 57%. Social network participation includes activities such as creating a user profile, posting messages or other contributions to social networks.

This is also a 1% increase in Malta over 2019, and a major increase over 2015 when this statistic stood at 60%.

Among EU Member States, the social network participation rate in 2020 was highest in Denmark (85%), ahead of Belgium (79%; low reliability), Cyprus (78%), Finland (75%) and Hungary (74%).

The EU countries with the lowest percentages are Italy (48%), Germany (54%), Bulgaria (55%) and Poland (55%).

In terms of the 16-24 age group in Malta, 93% participated in social networks, while of those in the 65-74 age group, only 31% participated.

In terms of EU-wide statistics, Among younger people in the EU aged 16 to 24 years, almost 9 in every 10 participated in social networks (87%). This share ranged from 79% in Italy to 97% in Denmark. Among older people aged 65 to 74 years, over a fifth (22%) participated in social networks. This share ranged from 10% in Croatia to 60% in Denmark.
