Air Malta operates its first flight to Berlin Brandenburg Airport

Air Malta has yesterday operated its first flight to Berlin Brandenburg ‘Willy Brandt’, the city’s newest airport. Named after former German Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt, the city’s long-awaited Airport (BER) has finally opened its doors and started welcoming airlines and passengers last week.

The airport, just south of the German capital in the state of Brandenburg, has replaced Tegel, (to which Air Malta used to operate) as well as Tempelhof and Schönefeld airports. Berlin Brandenburg is well connected to the city centre with regional trains running approximately every 15 minutes between Berlin Central Station and BER. Travel time is approximately 30 minutes. The airport is set to become the third busiest airport in Germany surpassing Düsseldorf Airport and making it one of the fifteen busiest in Europe.

Malta’s Ambassador to Germany, Dr Vanni Xuereb, travelled on Air Malta inaugural flight yesterday. He, together with Air Malta officials and the aircraft crew headed by Cpt Lino Busuttil and Cpt Chris Muscat, were welcomed upon arrival by Airport representatives.

This winter Air Malta is operating a twice weekly flight schedule every Wednesday and Sunday to and from the airport’s Terminal 1. Berlin is one of the ‘Business Guaranteed’ routes whereby the Airline is assuring that it will continue operating to this winter despite these uncertain and testing times.
