Average basic pay difference of over €2,000 between Gozitan and Maltese in 2019

A 2019 Labour Force Survey shows that there was an average basic pay difference of over €2,000 between Maltese and Gozitans.

The data was tabled in Parliament on Monday by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, following a parliamentary question from PN MP Chris Said, who asked the Minister to delineate the difference between the average basic pay Gozitan’s receive and the one that Maltese get.

Caruana presented the 2019 Labour Force Survey which showed that in 2019, the average basic pay for Malta was €19,721 while the one in Gozo was €17,533 showing a €2,188 discrepancy between the two.

This discrepancy is higher than the one registered in 2018 where the average basic pay in Malta was €18,898 and the one in Gozo was €16,953; a €1,945 difference.

Said also asked for the Minister to present the difference in yearly earnings between Gozitan and Maltese families.

Caruana presented information from a 2019 study (based on 2018 data) titled EU-SILC which examines the financial income and quality of life across the Maltese Islands.

The results show a €2,650 difference between the average NET income of Gozitan families and Maltese families. While Maltese families registered an average income of €28,684, Gozitan families registered an average of €26,034.
