Belvedere Garden in Marsa inaugurated

The Belvedere Garden in Marsa has been opened to the public following extensive works financed by Ambjent Malta (AM) and the Planning Authority (PA). 

This was announced by Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia together with Director for Environmental Projects within Ambjent Malta Josianne Muscat, Executive Chairman of the Planning Authority Martin Saliba, and Marsa Mayor Josef Azzopardi. 

Minister Farrugia explained that AM provided financial assistance amounting to around €356,000 to conduct the works on the construction of the water reservoir, the building of new footpaths, paving and plastering and painting of passages. The PA through the Development Planning Fund further contributed to a further €100,000.

In addition to this direct monetary contribution, which was provided to the Marsa Local Council, Ambjent Malta provided direct assistance in:

• the supply and installation benches and bins,
• the supply and installation of the lighting system,
• the upgrading of the soft areas, through pruning of the olive trees, soil levelling, grass cutting and tilling, and planting of 750 trees and shrubs,
• the installation of an irrigation system
• the installation of CCTV system,
• the installation of the fencing and gates,
• the installation of new signs,
• the restoration of the main fountain and
• cleaning.

“The Belvedere Garden in Marsa is located between Stefano Zerafa Street and December Thirteen Street and is one of the lungs of Marsa. This garden is endowed with a number of mature trees and resting places. Over time, there was a need for improvements on this garden and to upgrade certain facilities. That is why we decided to restore this garden and give it the attention it deserves. But to do this work it was necessary to invest a considerable sum of capital. Now in this garden a number of trees and shrubs have been planted, unwanted vegetation has been removed, soft landscaping took place, and irrigation equipment, security systems, and sustainable lighting were installed together with other improvements in the garden”, Minister Farrugia said.
