Challenge Group registers first ever Boeing 777-300 converted freighter in Europe

Malta-based Challenge Group, with established operations around the globe, has marked a significant milestone in the aviation industry with the registration of the first-ever Boeing 777-300 converted freighter in Europe under the 9H Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This historic event, celebrated during a press conference at the Challenge Group office in SkyParks, was attended by the Honourable Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, the Honourable Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, together with the CEO of Transport Malta, Kurt Farrugia, and the Director General of the Civil Aviation Directorate, Charles Pace, among other dignitaries.

The newly registered aircraft, nicknamed “Big Twin,” is a landmark addition to Challenge Group’s expanding fleet. This registration signifies a new chapter for the Group, highlighting its commitment to innovation and operational excellence. The Boeing 777-300 converted freighter, leased from AerCap, is the first of its kind in the EASA Region under the Maltese AOC, underscoring Challenge Group’s role as a trailblazer in the air cargo sector. This aircraft will soon be followed by an additional unit further cementing Malta’s position as a strategic hub for global air freight. The total investment for the 777 project is €350 million, with an expected business generation of €1.5 billion.

Speaking at the event, Challenge Group CEO, Yossi Shoukroun, expressed his enthusiasm for this achievement, stating: “Today marks a historic moment for Challenge Group and Malta’s aviation sector. The registration of the first-ever Boeing 777-300 converted freighter in Europe under the 9H AOC is a testament to our relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence. This aircraft, with its unparalleled capabilities, will enable us to meet the growing demands of global trade and reinforce our position as a key enabler in the supply chain.”

During the press conference attended by key figures from the aviation industry, the Prime Minister lauded the Group’s contributions to Malta’s aviation landscape, noting the economic and strategic benefits brought by such advancements.

Challenge Group’s achievements in 2024 have set a strong foundation for future growth. The Group expanded its fleet to over ten aircraft, including six Boeing 747s and four Boeing 767 freighters. Last year alone, five new destinations—Mumbai, Delhi, Dubai, Milan, and Nairobi—were introduced, complementing existing routes such as New York, Atlanta, and Houston in the US, and Hong Kong and Zhengzhou in the Asia Pacific region, reflecting the Group’s commitment to enhancing its global network.

Operationally, Challenge Group demonstrated exceptional performance, operating 4,000 flights and transporting 200,000 tons of cargo, which included high-value and complex shipments such as 5,000 horses, 600 aircraft engines, and more than 20,000 e-commerce shipments. The Group’s subsidiaries also played a vital role, with Challenge Handling managing 5,000 flights and 300,000 tons of cargo in Liège, and Challenge Logistics operating 18,000 trucks globally.

Looking ahead to 2025, Challenge Group aims to consolidate its network and structure, focusing on strategic growth and operational excellence. The introduction of two additional Boeing 777-300 converted freighters under the Maltese AOC will further enhance the Group’s capabilities.
