€3 million project involving St Thomas Bay jetties

Infrastructure Malta is building two out of three jetties in St Thomas Bay, after these suffered damages through years of contact with sea water and storms. This work aims to eliminate dangers for swimmers, fishers and boat enthusiasts who make use of this popular bay, and forms part of the commitment Infrastructure Malta is implementing towards the upgrade of maritime infrastructure in Malta and Gozo.

In this regard, Minister Ian Borg said that the ministry is, “committed to safeguard the safety of all Maltese and Gozitans, also through adequate infrastructure. This does not only count for our roads but for our bays and ports too. This work goes hand in hand with the commitment of Transport Malta, with the marking of swimmer zones and maritime enforcement. Investment in maritime infrastructure is essential and we will continue working to have safer and better ports with a clean and protected maritime environment.”

The two jetties are 50 metres long. The agency is doing its best to finish most of the reconstruction works during the summer months when the sea is calmer, both for the safety of workers as well as for the protection of the maritime environment. Last month, workers started demolition and cleaning of the structure with several measures for the protection of the environment. Structures are currently being formed. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In the meantime, there are plans for other projects at this bay, while two other quays are being rebuilt in taż-Żonqor with an investment of around €840,000.
