In 2022, the film industry in Malta contributed €85 million to the Maltese economy, which is the largest economic injection from this sector the country has seen in the last 10 years, the government said.
These positive results were the result of a total of 24 productions involving feature films, TV series, and reality shows coming from the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Norway, Germany, and Egypt, it said.
This year, the government said, alongside the Malta Film Commission, it will work to refine the advertising that has already been introduced by Screen Malta, another marketing tool that the commission will use to promote the country to the film world.
Minister for Tourism Clayton Bartolo remarked on the potential that the film industry has to bolster the economy. “Indeed, the film industry was an economic vaccine that strengthened the immunity of the country during a period when it was recovering from the effects and challenges of the pandemic,” said Bartolo.
Film Commissioner Johann Grech said how the work of the Commission is resulting in tangible effects that will continue to lead to more successes in the conditions and pay of local crew. “Our plan is working and we know where we’re headed. In no time at all, actors will be able to enjoy careers in the film industry. For the first time in the history of the Malta Film Commission, we are investing heavily in the education and training necessary for those who want to be part of this industry, as well as continuing to improve it for those already working,” he concluded.
