Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg has announced that the first lanes of the Luqa Junction project as well as the Kirkop tunnels and the Airport intersection will open by the first half of this year.
Borg, as well as Parliamentary Secretary Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, visited the ongoing works.
The steel structures forming the part of the flyovers are currently being build in Spain, and the first part is expected to start being brought to Malta in the coming weeks, the government said.
Borg said that these projects are among the largest infrastructure projects taking place in Malta this year. He said that they are evidence that the government is planning holistically for the benefit of Maltese cirizens.
Once these projects are complete, they will contribute to a 74% reduction in travel time and result in better air quality in Luqa, Gudja and other surrounding localities.
The Luqa junction will also include walking and cycling passages, which will be separated from the road along part of Council of Europe Road in order to join the existing bike lanes and sidewalks in Aviation Avenue.
