Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg attended the Ministers Transport Council in Brussels to discuss the FitFor55 Package proposals related to Transport. These consist of proposals related to the possible regulatory use of sustainable fuels in aviation, regulatory use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport, regulatory deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure

During these discussions the Minister reiterated that the EU’s collective ambitions on these proposals must capture and maintain the right momentum, whilst also remaining grounded in the realities of the different Member States. He stated that it is the Member States’ responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind whilst also safeguarding the competitiveness of important sectors that are global in nature; especially the shipping and aviation sectors. Minister Ian Borg emphasised that this is particularly important for island Member States such as Malta which are at the periphery of the EU and with close proximity to third countries which ambitions might not be at par with European targets.

Minister Borg today underlined that the European Union needs to move forward both ambitiously and sensibly on these files while also keeping a close eye on the interlinkages between all the FitFor55 files to ensure that our issues of connectivity and peripherality are thoroughly addressed.
