GreenPak has been named the national winner of the 2021 Energy Globe Award thanks to its pioneering project – iBiNs. The recycling project was cited as an exemplary solution which combines cutting-edge technology with practical solutions leading to tangible environmentally beneficial results.

This was announced during the 22nd Energy Globe Awards ceremony organised by the Energy Globe Foundation, which coincided with COP26 being held in Glasgow.

The technology incorporated in GreenPak’s iBiNs – Intelligent Recycling project provides accurate information and directions to the public as to where the closest iBiN is located. Any person with a smart-phone can use the web-app (www.ibins.mt) as it includes an inbuilt Google Maps feature.

Furthermore, the network of 800 iBiNs feeds information to a Management System that allows GreenPak to predict when the iBiNs need to be emptied and optimise the routes of waste collection trucks. Combined, this leads to an environmentally better service since waste is separated by material and creates less traffic since less trips are needed.

GreenPak CEO, Ing Mario Schembri said, “After replacing traditional bins, public usage increased by 39%, resulting in a 24% increase in quantity of waste collected, around 22% reduction in unnecessary collection trips, saving some 21,500 litres of fuel and reducing traffic movements and vehicle emissions.”

With more than 180 participating countries, the ENERGY GLOBE Award is today’s most prestigious environmental award. It is awarded annually to projects saving our environment by personal action, sustainable projects or campaigns for raising awareness in sustainability. The awards for these many projects are presented in the countries where the project has been implemented in cooperation with partners, in particular with the international offices of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and UNIDO.
