More than half of the 3,578 Gozitan residents who have a full-time job in Malta are employed in the public sector, according to data released by the National Statistics Office.
In 2019, there were 15,193 Gozitans in full-time employment, reflecting an increase of 6.2% over the previous year. Out of this total, 11,517 had a full-time job in Gozo while 3,578 had a full-time job in Malta.
Out of the 15,000+ full-time Gozitans, 62% worked in the private sector. However, the public sector accounted for 51% of full-time jobs for Gozitans working in Malta.
89.9% of those working in the public sector worker in the public administration and defence; compulsory social security; education; human health; and social work activities.
Full-time employment in the Malta region stood at 214,186, an increase of 6.3% over 2018.
Here, the private sector accounted for 79% of jobs.
The global number of employed persons in Malta and Gozo (those with a full-time job or who have a part-time job as their primary employment) amounted to 261,145, an increase of 5.8% when compared to the previous year.
The number of Malta residents who worked on a full-time basis reached 210, 510, an increase of 6.3% when compared to 2018. The private sector amounted to 79.6% of the total, while the remaining worked in the public sector.
