Malta Gaming Authority officially presents licence to National Lottery plc

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has officially presented National Lottery plc with its licence. The company has become the operator of popular lotteries Lottu, Super 5 and others, taking over from Maltco.

The licence is valid for 10 years and is subject to the MGA’s regulations and supervision.

It was presented by Economy Minister Silvio Schembri. The concession agreement signed between National Lottery plc and the ministry in March 2022 ensures that the National Lottery is operated at the highest standards, the ministry said.

Speaking during the event, Schembri thanked the Privatisation Unit for leading the process and the MGA for its professional support. “I am certain that the new operators will continue to build on the popularity of these lotteries while introducing new ones,” Schembri said.

The minister said the government’s responsibility goes beyond issuing a licence. “We must ensure that National Lottery plc continues to promote, design and actuate the principles of responsible gaming, while protecting its clients. While the economic profit of gaming should be given importance, it cannot come at the detriment of players.”

Schembri also thanked Maltco, which operated the lotteries for almost 20 years, and augured National Lottery plc success in the coming ten years.

MGA CEO Carl Brincat said the authority is confident that the new operator will dedicate all necessary resources to operate at a high level, protect its clients’ interests and ensure responsible gaming.
