Malta is not heading towards a lockdown, Prime Minister says

Prime Minister Robert Abela has shut down speculation that Malta is heading towards a lockdown.

In recent days, a screenshot supposedly showing a list of new Covid-19 measures which would take Malta into a complete lockdown has been doing the rounds on social media.

Referring to this though, Abela said on Thursday that he does not know where the screenshot came from and said that Malta will not be going into lockdown.

“I don’t know from where this came but I can confirm that we are not heading towards a total lockdown,” he said.

During a press conference on a massive investment in industrial areas around the island, Abela said that he wanted to send a message of hope to the business community, even while people are “irresponsibly” saying that the government is about to close the country down through a lockdown.

“I ask you to see what’s happening in other countries; what the realities are – there are protests in the streets because the governments are not doing anything to safeguard their investment. Maybe because they can’t, given the fiscal limits they have”, Abela said.
