The stock of Malta-licensed motor vehicles stood grew by 3.3% to 391,914 in the second quarter of the year, over the same period in 2018, according to a press release published by the National Statistics Office (NSO).
Out of the total, 77.6% were passenger cars, 13.6% were commercial vehicles, 7.6% were motorcycles/quadricycles and AllTerrain Vehicles (ATVs), while buses and minibuses amounted to less than 1%.
During the second quarter of the year, the stock of licensed vehicles increased at a net average rate of 45 vehicles per day, reaching an average of 82 newly-licensed vehicles per day.
Furthermore, newly-licensed vehicles put on the road during the period under review amounted to 7,439. The majority of the newly-licensed vehicles, 5,272 (70.9%) were passenger cars, followed by motorcycles with 1,116 (15%).
Newly-licensed new motor vehicles amounted to 3,670 (49.3%), while newly-licensed used motor vehicles totalled 3,769 (50.7%).
During the second quarter, 7,503 vehicles were taken off the roads due to a restriction. Out of these, 34.3% were put for resale, 32.4% were scrapped, while 31.1% were garaged.
Moreover, vehicles that had their restriction ending during the second quarter totalled 4,170. The majority were recorded as having been put for resale (60%) or garaged (39.1%).
In addition, 234,822 vehicles or (59.9%) were petrol-powered engines. Diesel-powered vehicles reached 152,266 or (38.9) while electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 0.8% of the entire stock, with a total of 3,280.
