Malta’s inflation remains 1.7% in May

Malta’s annual rate of inflation as measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) remained at a constant rate of 1.7% in March 2019, according to figures published by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The twelve-month moving average rate for May stood at 1.7%, too.

The largest upward impact on annual inflation was measured in the food and non-alcoholic beverages index with 0.67 percentage points (pp), due to higher prices of vegetables.

After that, the index of restaurants and hotels saw an increase of 0.59 percentage points. In addition, housing, electricity, gas and other fuels index rose up by 0.18pp.

The largest downward impact was recorded in the education index with a decrease of 0.09pp. Clothing and footwear 0.02pp.

The furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance index and the clothing and footwear index dropped by 0.01pp, respectively.
