Malta Public Transport (MPT) announces a significant investment of €8 million in acquiring 30 new buses, aimed at further expanding the bus fleet to accommodate the growing number of passengers choosing public transport as their preferred mode of travel. This investment comes in response to the substantial increase in passenger numbers observed recently, reflecting a growing demand for reliable and sustainable transportation options across the country.

Colonel Dr Mark Mallia, Chief Executive Officer of Transport Malta stated that Transport Malta and Malta Public Transport are dedicated to providing a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly public transport system that continues to meet the evolving needs of our communities. “We are confident that this new investment will contribute to an improved travel experience for all passengers while advancing our collective efforts towards a more sustainable future,” said Colonel Dr Mallia.

Recognising the necessity to provide a more dependable service and to meet the needs of the expanding passenger base, these buses were ordered in November 2023 as part of Malta Public Transport’s commitment to enhancing customer experience. This initiative follows the successful launch of bus tracking features on the Tallinja App, as well as improvements in employee conditions and other customer-centric initiatives.

In the first quarter of 2024 alone, there has been a remarkable 19% increase in passenger numbers, totaling 17.2 million compared to 14.5 million in the same period last year. Additionally, there has been a notable rise in active Tallinja card holders, indicating a growing preference for public transport options among residents and visitors alike.

The newly acquired buses, which will be deployed during peak season on busy routes, feature modern amenities such as USB chargers and free WiFi to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. With their low-floor design and two-door configuration for efficient boarding and alighting, these 12-meter buses are equipped with Euro 6 technology, representing the cleanest diesel option available. Furthermore, they boast powerful air conditioning and ventilation systems, ensuring a comfortable journey for passengers even during hot weather.

While these buses are diesel-powered, it is important to note that every passenger who chooses public transport contributes to reducing CO2 emissions compared to private vehicles. However, Malta Public Transport remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable practices and is actively pursuing its fleet electrification program. With the support of the government, through the Recovery and Resilience Facility, Malta Public Transport aims to introduce 120 electric zero-emission buses into its fleet by the end of 2025, replacing older diesel buses. The project, which includes the necessary infrastructure enhancements, is progressing rapidly and is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
