The number of Malta-registered business units was up by 8.1% to 113,256 in 2018, as compared to the preceding year, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said based on the Business Register (BR). This means that a total of 8,458 business units were registered last year.
Wholesale and retail trade businesses accounted for 17% of the total registered units in 2018. Financial and insurance activities claimed 15.6% of the total pie; professional, scientific and technical activities reached 12.4% and administrative and support service activities came to 8.2%, according to the NSO release.
The Business Register (BR) provides one of the most detailed local business profiles in Malta, and is classified by economic activity according to the NACE (Nomenclature Statistique des Activités Économiques dans la Communauté Européenne) classification of economic activites in the European Union, the NSO report says.
