The Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy is a global initiative, promoted by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE) and is part of World Investor Week 2024. Over 60 stock exchanges worldwide are participating in this initiative throughout the week.

As a member of the WFE, the Malta Stock Exchange (MSE) opened its session today with a “Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy” ceremony, held at the Exchange’s premises in Valletta. The event was inaugurated by Mr. Joseph Portelli, Executive Chairman of the MSE, and Dr Sarah Pulis, Head of Conduct Supervision at the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).

In his opening remarks, Portelli emphasised the importance of MSE’s participation in this initiative and stated the Exchanges commitment to financial literacy. ‘The Exchange is at the forefront of financial education in Malta. Testimony to this, is the Malta Stock Exchange Institute, (MSEI) which was set up to offer a comprehensive range of courses, catering to learners from beginners to seasoned professionals.”’ Portelli said.

Portelli also mentioned the development of Investi.com.mt, the new financial website which will provide access to financial news, market statistics, and technical analysis tools for all instruments traded on the Exchange.

Dr Pulis highlighted the MFSA’s ongoing efforts to enhance investor education. She outlined various initiatives, such as school visits, presentations focused on identifying scams, informative podcasts on social media platforms, and regular appearances on educational television programs. ‘These initiatives are all aimed at fostering financial literacy and equipping our community with the necessary knowledge to make informed investment decisions and becoming financially independent’, she said.

Following the symbolic ringing of the Opening Trading Bell, attendees participated in a 45- minute workshop led by financial coach Patrick DeBattista who spoke about “Investing Essentials: Understanding Risks, Rewards, and Scams.” During the session DeBattista delved into the fundamental principles of investing, the importance of effective risk management, and the evolving investment profiles through different life stages. DeBattista also equipped participants with valuable strategies for identifying potential scams in today’s digital landscape.

The workshop attracted a diverse audience from various age groups, highlighting the strong need and public interest in financial literacy.
