Albeit slowing, Malta’s inbound tourism grows further in January

Total inbound visitor numbers in Malta during January grew by an estimated 2.4%, as compared to the same month a year earlier, totalling 127,723, according to figures published by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The figure slowed as compared to the 11% year-on-year increase in December 2018.

Some 114,551 inbound tourist trips were conducted for holiday purposes, while 9,461 focused on business. Total tourist expenditure increased by an estimated 3% to €84.7m.

Total nights spent in Malta increased by a year-on-year 7.6%, amounting to 912,439. Collective accommodation establishments received the largest share of guest nights (49.2%), NSO reports.

Inbound tourists from the Non-EU member states went up by year-on-year 14.6% to 20,788. Most inbound tourists arrived from the age group between 25 and 44 (41.3%), followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket (31.6%), according to NSO.
