Malta’s annual rate of inflation as measured by the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 1.49% in January 2019, the same rate as in the preceding month, according to figures published by the Maltese National Statistics Office (NSO). The twelve-month moving average rate was 1.21%.
The largest upward impact on annual inflation was recorded in the food index (up by 0.97 percentage points), chiefly fed by increasing prices of take-aways. The transport and communication index grew by 0.34 percentage points while the housing index was up by 0.19 percentage points, the latter boosted by increasing prices of fuels and maintenance services.
The largest downward impact was recorded in the clothing and footwear index (down by 0.27 percentage points), the NSO figures reveal. Household equipment and maintenance cost index was down by 0.13 percentage points.
