Maria Micallef has been appointed Chairperson of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD).
Micallef brings extensive experience from the private sector and previously served as Chairperson of Air Malta between 2014 and 2017, a government statement said. She currently sits as a director on several companies operating in the manufacturing, tourism, insurance and financial services sectors.
She is the first woman to occupy the role of Chairperson of the MCESD. Micallef holds a degree in Chemistry and Biology and a Master’s degree in Strategic and General Management from Maastricht School of Management.
During a meeting with Micallef, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue Andy Ellul said that her appointment represents another step towards strengthening the MCESD.
Ellul described the MCESD as a crucial institution in the implementation of national policies, stressing that the government is committed to ensuring it continues to be equipped with all the necessary tools. In this context, he announced that in the coming months the government will launch the Young Shapers Forum, an initiative that will give secondary school students the opportunity to participate in discussions within the MCESD.
The Parliamentary Secretary said that these initiatives confirm the government’s belief in social dialogue and in the importance of youth participation in shaping the country’s future.
At the end of the meeting, Ellul thanked outgoing Chairperson Perit David Xuereb for the work he carried out during his three-year tenure.
