Marvin Gaerty will be stepping down as Malta’s Tax Commissioner at the end of this month, and will be replaced by the Permanent Secretary of the Transport Ministry Joe Caruana, the Finance Ministry announced on Tuesday.
The Ministry said in a statement that Gaerty had written to Finance Minister Clyde Caruana requesting that he step down from his role.
It was agreed that Gaerty would step down at the end of this month in order to allow for a transition period to take place.
Gaerty will be leading a consultative working group on the taxation sector within the Finance Ministry after he leaves his current role, the Ministry said.
Joe Caruana has been nominated by the government as Gaerty’s replacement.
He currently serves as the Permanent Secretary in Ian Borg’s Transport Ministry, but has served as a Permanent Secretary within the Education Ministry and Finance Ministry in the past.
He will be the Designate Commissioner for Tax until the end of January, before taking up the role of Commissioner on 1 February.
John Galea, who has served as the Permanent Secretary for the Justice Ministry since 2016, meanwhile will take up the role now left vacant at the Transport Ministry.
