The Malta Entertainment and Arts Association (MEIA) proudly introduces its newly elected Executive Committee, following a successful Annual General Meeting (AGM) that saw strong participation from members both online and in person. The new executive will lead MEIA’s efforts in advocating for Malta’s creative industries, focusing on key strategic areas to foster growth, transparency, and sustainability in the sector.

The newly appointed MEIA Executive Committee consists of dedicated professionals from various fields, each bringing valuable expertise and a shared vision for the future of Malta’s cultural and creative industries. The new Executive Committee is now composed of re-elected Maria Galea, Marilena Gauci, and welcomes new members Christine Dalli, Nicole Debono, Joseph Farrugia, Mariah Sapiano, Marcon Borg Caruana, and Stephanie Bonello. All the new members are creative professionals and advocates for the arts, bringing additional expertise across different backgrounds, from legal, financial, governance, enterprise and more. This will ensure that MEIA continues to be a strong advocate for the progression of the sector, artists, cultural workers, organisations and creative businesses across all disciplines, including music, theatre, visual arts, dance, film, television, literature, design, and live events.

The executive committee would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Jeanine Rizzo and Mr Pawlu Borg Bonaci, for having served on MEIA’s executive committee from its inception and for having been instrumental to its development. MEIA would like to also thank Sephora Cutajar for having served on the Executive Committee for the past two years.

With a renewed commitment to addressing the challenges and opportunities within the creative industries, the new Executive Committee has outlined several key areas of focus for the coming year. MEIA will continue to push for improvements in crucial areas such as tax and VAT implementation, transparency in sponsorships and funding, and the fair distribution of resources. A primary goal is the development of a National Screen Policy, ensuring the local film industry has the support and framework needed to thrive. The committee will also advocate for better insurance structures for creative professionals, enhanced PRS collection systems, and stronger lobbying for accessible creative spaces.

A major priority will be empowering MEIA members by providing resources and fostering collaboration within the industry. Plans include the launch of rate cards for the performing arts, which will help establish fair pay standards for artists and creatives. MEIA will also roll out a Subcommittees Programme, giving members a more direct role in shaping policies and initiatives. Additionally, the association is working on securing a physical space for MEIA and the creative community, creating a dedicated hub where professionals can connect, collaborate, and access resources.

Looking beyond Malta, MEIA aims to enhance international relations and export opportunities for local artists, ensuring that Maltese talent is showcased on a global stage. The association is actively seeking new funding and sponsorships to support its initiatives and create sustainable opportunities for creatives.

Another exciting development is the upcoming MEIA conference in November 2025, which will serve as a major platform for discussions on industry challenges, policy development, and creative innovation. This year MEIA will also announce a number of partnerships that aim to create less fragmentation and stronger advocacy.

This year’s AGM was a testament to the strength and unity of Malta’s creative community, with members actively engaging in discussions about MEIA’s past achievements and future direction. The response to this year’s meeting highlighted a growing enthusiasm for collective action and a shared commitment to strengthening the industry. With a strong executive team in place and an ambitious agenda set for the months ahead, MEIA looks forward to continuing its mission of advocating for fair policies, creating opportunities for artists, and driving positive change within Malta’s cultural and creative sectors.
