Minister responds to the economic vision of the Malta Chamber of Commerce for post Covid-19

The Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister Carmelo Abela said that on behalf of government, he has attentively read the report published this morning by the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry. The report presented results as well as propositions in relation to the economic vision for the country in a post-COVID19 context. Minister Abela thanked the think tank made up of a number of different individuals representing the business sector who have worked on the report – which includes a number of suggested measures – titled ‘Heading beyond Covid.’

The Minister responsible for social dialogue and sustainable development added that after today’s conference, he will follow up with further meetings with the Malta Chamber of Commerce so as to devise tangible actions based on the results presented in the report. This also in an effort for government to have clear visibility of the report.

During his intervention, Minister Carmelo Abela remarked that when looking at possible opportunities for economic growth in a post-Covid context, sustainability related matters are the key to a resilient economy which is able to handle both current and future challenges. He explained how this can be achieved in line with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations where member states – including Malta – are working towards reaching this goals by 2030. The objective is not only to address current circumstances, but to aim for a better future for the next generations in relation to economic, social and environmental aspects.

In Abela’s own words “we should not fear change. We have to promote a culture of change in the way we are doing things”. He stated that both government and the private sector need to work closely together to pave the way for a change in mentality and sustainability. He stated that at this stage all parties need to reflect on what they can do for this to happen. He added that government is currently shouldering its responsibility in relation to this subject and is focusing its efforts on areas such as good governance which is a crucial factor for all the sectors, including institutions. He said that the private sector has an important role to play in relation to governance.

Minister Abela thanked President David Xuereb for this innovative initiative and remarked that this has, yet again, proven that the Malta Chamber of Commerce has been at the forefront, offering solutions in favour of a high-quality economic climate in the Maltese islands.
