After temporarily redirecting traffic since March, Malta International Airport (MLA) has reopened its ring road leading to the main terminal building, according to a press statement sent to Business Malta. Traffic had been rerouted to allow for excavation works in preparation for the construction of an underground link to 1,300 new parking spaces.
The link will be part of a passageway establishing a connection between the company’s multi-storey car park, which is still under construction, and the terminal building. MLA expects the addition to further enhance the passenger journey, thanks to the covered parking spaces.
Having completed the bulk of civil works related to the underground link, MLA will now kickstart the final stage of the construction process of this tunnel, which forms part of the company’s €20m investment in a new multi-storey car park.
Works on the project started at the end of 2018, and MLA expects to wind up constructions by summer 2020. In addition to the new 1,300 covered parking spaces on the airport campus, car rental companies will be provided with a centralised area of operation.
