Inbound tourists for the year 2022 amounted to 2,286,597, while the total nights spent surpassed 16.6 million nights, the NSO said Monday.
Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €2.0 billion. Total expenditure per capita decreased to €880 from €899 in 2021.
Total inbound tourists for December 2022 were estimated at 136,423, while total nights spent amounted to 967,108.
During the month under review, a total of 117,668 inbound tourists visited Malta for holiday purposes, and 12,966 tourists came for business purposes.
The largest share of inbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44 (41.2 per cent), followed by the 45-64 age bracket (33.6 per cent). United Kingdom, Italian and French residents made up 43.9 per cent of total inbound tourists.
Total nights spent went up by 24.8 per cent when compared to December 2021, surpassing 0.9 million nights. The largest share of guest nights (83.3 per cent) was spent in rented accommodation establishments.
The average length of stay of total inbound tourists stood at 7.1 nights. Total tourist expenditure surpassed €101.5 million, an increase of 85.0 per cent over the corresponding month in 2021. The average expenditure per night was estimated at €105.0.
