NSO reports decrease in registered unemployment for February 2022

The National Statistics Office has reported a 1,460 person decrease in registered unemployment in the month of February 2022, compared to the same month in 2021.

Registered unemployment levels have decreased for all age groups and for both males and females, seeing a decrease of 1,386 persons registering under Part I of the unemployment register, meaning those who are either new job seekers who have left school, re-entrants into the labour market or individuals who have been made redundant by their former employers.

Part II of the unemployment register saw an additional drop of 74 persons registering, which include workers who have been dismissed from work due to disciplinary action, left work out of their own free will, have refused work or training opportunities or were removed off the register after an inspection by law enforcement personnel.

A total of 74 males and females under 20 registered for work under Part I and Part II of the unemployment register in February of this year.

The highest number of persons registering for work in the unemployment register was found in the 45 and over age bracket, seeing a total of 522 persons for Feb 2022. This is in comparison with the February 2021 statistic of a total of 1,149 persons.

There was a considerable decrease in those who had been registering for work for less than 21 weeks and those who had been registering between 21 and 52 weeks, the statistic reported.

The NSO also saw an increase in the number of persons with a disability who registered for work compared to 2021. The increase was of four persons, amounting to 256 persons. 75% of total registrants with a disability were males.

Males and females on the unemployment register commonly sought occupations as clerical support workers, with 21.3% and 38.9% respectively.
