The Planning Authority approved an application by Project Green to extend the Family Park in Bengħajsa by a further 7,000 square metres. This decision follows Monday’s news that 20,000 square metres of land in Wied Inċita have also been approved for regeneration for the public’s enjoyment.
The Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour welcomes the approval of this application. It means that the Family Park in Bengħajsa – located in the south of Malta – will grow to a total recreational space of 27,000 square metres.
“One project after another, we are giving new life to areas with spaces that offer a better quality of life for people and beautify the localities. In the case of Bengħaisa, what was once supposed to be an extension to an industrial project is instead providing the residents of the southern part of Malta with a place for recreation. We made strategic decisions, where we prioritised open space over an industrial project. I look forward to seeing the completion of this extension, and we continue to move forward on several other projects,” stated Minister Miriam for the Environment, Energy and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Dalli.
The Family Park opened its doors to families in March last year. The expansion project includes planting over 140 new trees such as oak, carob and laurel. Geogrid paving is intended to stabilise the soil and thus provide an accessible path while maintaining the land’s natural elements. Recreation facilities such as slides and inclusive facilities will also be installed using sustainable materials.
Project Green CEO Joseph Cuschieri reiterated the agency’s commitment to continuing to implement several urban greening projects.
