Prime Minister Robert Abela has said that he will ‘extend a hand of friendship’ to the opposition in his first address after being sworn into office on Monday morning.
In a video message on Monday evening, Abela said that the electoral campaign, when compared to past campaigns, focused primarily on ideas, credibility and competence. “That is how it should be when it comes to choosing the country’s leadership.”
The choice of who should be entrusted to run the country should not be a fight to see who breaks the other first, he said. “I feel we made a step forward, although we might not have completely reached that goal. Let us work so that we can reach it this legislature.”
Abela said that he will continue to work to obtain the people’s trust, especially the trust of those who did not go out to vote in last Saturday’s general election.
“I want you to feel comfortable in choosing your leader in the next election,” Abela said.
Abela said that he is satisfied with the way the electoral process went, noting that the PL’s electoral campaign focused on new ideas, credibility, and competency.
“This is a confirmation that the public wants Malta to enter a new phase,” Abela said.
Whilst he will continue to seek expert’s advice, the road towards the total removal of Covid-19 restrictions in Malta will continue as planned, he said. Abela said that the pandemic has affected many, an obstacle that together with the public, the party will overcome.
He said that he will involve, as much as possible, the social partners through consultation on every decision made. Abela said that the country will grow in a stronger and more sustainable way, saying that the education sector will be improved. Jobs and quality careers will be made, and the environment will be protected and strengthened, Abela said.
He thanked the public for placing their trust in him, vowing to create a better future for the country. Abela said that he aims to reach higher levels and newer standards, keeping in mind future generations.
