Regeneration work begins on Buġibba Square

The regeneration work on the main square of Buġibba has officially begun, with an investment of €10 million in one of Malta’s most popular tourist and entertainment destinations. This project, jointly led by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) and Infrastructure Malta (IM), aims to breathe new life into the square and enhance its identity for both locals and visitors.

During a press conference attended by members of the local council and representatives of the business community, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Chris Bonett, explained that the last intervention in this area of Buġibba dates back more than 20 years. “This government’s vision is clear: we are regenerating and improving public spaces across the country, giving them new life and making them more attractive for Maltese, Gozitans, and the tourists who visit us.”

The minister also highlighted that this project is located just a few hundred meters from another Infrastructure Malta initiative in the area — the new breakwater and ferry landing, which is now in its final phase. “We are committed to continuing our investment in projects that enhance the quality of life in our country while supporting the private sector in upgrading and improving their offerings, which will then be enjoyed by both tourists and locals alike,” Minister Bonett stated.

Infrastructure Malta’s CEO, Steve Ellul, outlined the phases of this project, which is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. Apart from giving the square a completely new look, Infrastructure Malta will also be upgrading underground services and regenerating the roads leading to this area. He expressed his gratitude to all those involved in bringing this project to life and emphasized that Infrastructure Malta and the Malta Tourism Authority are working hand in hand to ensure the project is completed on time while minimizing disruptions for those frequenting the area.

This significant project is a testament to the government’s dedication to maintaining Malta’s status as a premier Mediterranean destination. By modernising Buġibba Square, the project aims to create a vibrant and welcoming environment that reflects Malta’s rich cultural heritage and commitment to urban excellence.
