Rehabilitation of Wied Liemu with an investment of €386,000

Wied Liemu is being rehabilitated with an investment of €386,000, co-financed by the Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. Wied Liemu is found within the limits of Rabat and forms part of the largest water dam in Malta, as the rainwater flows through Dingli and ends up in Salini.

This project was announced by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli and Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett together with the Director General of Parks Malta Adrian Attard.

The project in Wied Liemu includes the restoration of a Knight’s era water canal, the restoration of rubble walls, the restoration of an existing bridge and the rebuilding of two stone bridges to give farmers access to their fields.

During the summer months, Parks Malta started cleaning this valley from waste and material that has accumulated over the years, in order to avoid flooding which would impact the surrounding paths and fields, resulting in the loss of agricultural products and soil. This investment will continue to give more accessibility through continuous works, which will continue to create more educational knowledge and awareness in favour of the environment.

Minister Miriam Dalli explained that through this rehabilitation project we are safeguarding our country’s natural heritage.

“Around Malta we find several valleys with endemic flora and fauna, and therefore it is necessary to preserve them. Thanks to Parks Malta, we are continuously working to have more valleys that are accessible and preserved in the best possible way,” stated Minister Dalli.

Minister Miriam Dalli encouraged the public to keep these valleys clean from all types of waste with the aim of not ending up in the sea.

Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett said that the works being carried out in Wied Liemu are funded by the Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

“Parks Malta, through European Funds, has already invested over €1.9 million to carry out works in two other valleys including Wied Santa Katarina and Wied il-Fiddien, while two other projects of over €1.5 million are planned, to offer more places of enjoyment for Maltese and Gozitan families,” said Parliamentary Secretary Bonett.
