Following the publication of Unlocking the Mentors (UTM) in Qatar in May, creators of the book will publish the Maltese Edition by end-summer, aiming to inspire the younger generations through the success stories of today’s native leaders, masterminds and trend-setters, Claire Vuylsteke, Content & Event Manager of UTM, tells Business Malta.

UTM conducts around 50 face-to-face interviews with what they tag as “VIP personalities” in Malta, compile them together with inspiring narratives and give away the books free of charge — thanks to the invaluable support of their partners and donors — to universities, business schools, social and community development foundations, think tanks, libraries, governmental offices, selected private institutions, just to mention a few.

“The Unlocking the Mentors books are meant to be touched, passed on from one hand to another, read alone or in working groups, quoted in college classes, utilised in executive meetings and roundtables, introduced at all levels of the public sphere, and so on,” Ms Vuylsteke says.

‘Winning-ticket’ for ‘wandering minds’

“However, at UTM we go beyond, as we believe our publications should be the ultimate winning-ticket for those wandering young minds who are seeking direct/indirect talks and mentorship from their much admired countrymen and women,” she adds.

UTM decided to publish the Malta edition, as the island nation is one of the countries that sports the highest employment rates in the European Union and has a genuine vision of translating the current prosperous economic situation into real future opportunities for the Maltese students and younger generations, according to the editors. The Malta edition is being produced in parallel to other projects, both in Europe and the Middle East.

Organisers are planning the book premiere to be a one-of-a-kind inspirational event organised around September-October 2019 at the Valletta campus of the University of Malta in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Employment and the patronage of minister Evarist Bartolo. At the event, UTM Malta mentors will highlight their achievements and network with students from all over the country.

Charity event LifeCycle Challenge 2019 raised €1,142 for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, according to a press statement sent to Business Malta. The event was held at University of Malta Msida Campus and in Valletta. The title sponsor of the event was Nescafé 3in1.

“The public the chance to get a taste of what the LifeCycle participants experience at the gruelling challenges organised annually in aid of renal patients in Malta,” the press statement says.

Three professional bikes, which have been used on past LifeCycle Challenges to Zambia, Tanzania and Oman, were set up at Nescafé stand, where participants were able to cycle on a static base for few minutes in return for a donation.

LifeCycle Founder Alan Curry thanked all those who took part, and the sponsor Nescafé 3in1 for making this another great event at raising money and awareness to help improve facilities for renal patients.

LifeCycle organises bike challenges in different countries to generate funding for the needs and care of kidney disease patients and their families. The foundation’s work focuses on three major areas; raising awareness, supporting treatment and research, and working hand in hand with the medical staff of Mater Dei Hospital’s Renal Unit.

This year, the LifeCycle Challenge is being organised for the 21st time, and it will be taking cyclists on a 2,000-km route from Vietnam to Laos and Cambodia ending at the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat temples. Training for the challenge starts this month.

The LifeCycle Foundation was founded in 1999 in Malta to create awareness and generate support for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, according to the official page of the foundation. This year the challenge will take place between 9 September and 23 September across Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

The post LifeCycle charity event raises €1,142 first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

The LifeCycle Foundation Malta will hold two charity events — one at the University of Malta in Msida and the other at the main gate of Valletta — to inspire people of all ages to raise money by cycling for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, according to a press statement sent to Business Malta. The events are sponsored by Nescafé 3in1.

The LifeCycle Challenge for 2019 and 2020 is organising two three-day events, where participants will ride stationary bikes, turning every five minutes of cycling into a €2 donation each.

The first event takes place at the University of Malta from 13 May, Monday, to 15 May, Wednesday, at the Main Quadrangle of the university. The venue will be open from 09:00 to 16:00 every day.

The second event takes place at the city gate (opposite the Maltese parliament building) in Valletta from 16 May, Thursday, to 18 May, Saturday. The venue will be open from 09:00 to 14:00 every day.

“As part of our Nescafé 3in1 sponsorship we are offering the public the chance to be part of LifeCycle Challenge,” said Alfred J. Borg, Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager at Nestlé. “As much as LifeCycle Foundation has from its very inception sought to instill respect and dignity for renal patients, their families, and the rest of the community through various educational initiatives, Nescafé too seeks to instill respect from the plant, to the farmer, to the community, and ultimately to our consumer,” he added.

“Our aim is to involve sports enthusiasts and the public of all ages, to experience cycling and, at the same time, help us improve the lives of kidney patients. The more people can join us on this stunt, the more we can extend our support. Thanks to our sponsor Nescafé 3in1, we are able to bring the LifeCycle experience closer to the public,” said Alan Curry, LifeCycle Founder.

The LifeCycle Foundation was founded in 1999 in Malta to create awareness and generate support for patients suffering from end-stage renal disease, according to the official page of the foundation. This year the challenge will take place between 9 September and 23 September across Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

The journal also launches a new research format.

Traditionally, a psychologist and a linguist head the interdisciplinary journal. Professor Cynthia Clopper from Ohio State University is the co-editor-in-chief of the journal.

In a recent editorial published in the journal, the two editors announced the launch of a new format of a registered report. In this new format, researchers can propose a study with a detailed plan laying down all details of design and analysis. After reviewing the plan, a positive evaluation will mean a provisional acceptation of the research, and the results will be published regardless of the outcome, the press statement says

Language and Speech is among the first journals in linguistics to adopt this format, which is foreseen to help battle the replication crises in psychology and related fields and foster the feasibility of replication studies, the editors expect.

The post Scientific journal names UoM prof as co-editor, launches new format first appeared on The Malta Business Weekly.

The University of Malta was named among the best graduate schools offering the most prominent programs in game design in 2019, according to a press release by the Princeton Review, which compiles and publishes the list.

The Princeton Review — known for its education services and school rankings in dozens of categories — released its 10th annual ranking lists, which name the top 50 undergraduate and top 25 graduate schools.

The University of Malta in Msida was named the 17th best such institution, being listed among the top 25 graduate schools.

The Princeton Review chose the schools based on data it collected in its 2018 survey of administrators at 150 institutions that offer game design courses, majors, or degree programs. Surveyed schools were in the U.S., Canada and abroad. The survey requested information in four areas: academics, faculty, technology, and career prospects. It covered everything from the schools’ courses and facilities to their graduates’ starting salaries and professional achievements. In all, more than 40 data points were analysed to tally the rankings.

“The schools that made our lists this year have stellar programs for aspiring game designers and developers,” said Robert Franek, The Princeton Review’s Editor-in-Chief. “Their faculties are outstanding, and their facilities are awesome. Just as impressive: their alumni include many of the video game industry’s most prominent artists, designers, developers, and entrepreneurs,”
