On 27 September Malta’s Hilton Hotel was abuzz with energy as Tech Runners 2024, organised by MelaTech, brought together around 200 tech professionals for a day of learning, innovation and networking. The event, a fresh highlight on Malta’s tech calendar, showcased local and international thought leaders sharing their expertise in a variety of cutting-edge fields such as AI, cybersecurity, cloud engineering and more.

Keynote speakers: Shaping the future of tech

The event featured three standout keynote speakers who set the stage for deep, insightful discussions:

  • Professor Alexiei Dingli, a prominent AI expert from the University of Malta, opened the proceedings speaking about the impact of artificial intelligence on everyday life. His presentation delved into the ethical considerations of AI, sparking discussions on responsible innovation and in the growing role of agents in day-to-day activities.
  • From the international stage, Marco Amoedo, Global Alliance CTO at KPMG and Mario Trueba Cantero, director at KPMG, delivered a keynote on global trends in cloud engineering. His talk touched on the importance of agility and scalability in modern software architecture, drawing on his vast experience with cloud technologies at enterprise level.
  • Dr Gege Gatt, CEO of EBO, shared the closing keynote and captivated the audience with his thoughts on AI’s role in transforming businesses and improving user engagement. His expertise in AI-driven customer support provided actionable insights into the real-world applications of these technologies.

These powerful presentations set the tone for the rest of the day, pushing participants to think critically about the role of technology in shaping the future and in looking at tools that can help them in their activities.

Specialised tracks: Customising the experience

With over 20 speakers spread across three tracks, Tech Runners catered to a wide array of interests. Sessions covered a diverse range of topics, from .NET development to Angular, React and BI, ensuring that developers and engineers could find relevant, impactful content. For those more focused on infrastructure, the cloud engineering and cybersecurity tracks offered deep dives into emerging threats and solutions, while data scientists and BI enthusiasts explored the latest trends in big data analysis.

This multi-track setup allowed attendees to create their own journey, tailoring the day’s sessions to their specific interests and professional needs.

Networking and collaboration

Beyond the educational content, Tech Runners also provided ample opportunities for networking. Coffee breaks and a stand-up networking lunch allowed participants to connect with peers and industry leaders. Representatives from top tech companies in Malta hosted sponsor booths, showcasing cutting-edge projects and innovations. These interactions facilitated potential collaborations and professional growth in a relaxed, engaging environment.

The day concluded with an after-party at Hammett’s Mestizo, giving participants the chance to unwind and continue their discussions in a more informal setting.

Practical takeaways for professionals

The hallmark of Tech Runners 2024 was its practitioner-focused agenda. Each session was designed to leave attendees with actionable takeaways, from tips on improving development workflows to insights into securing digital assets in an increasingly interconnected world. Many speakers emphasised practical solutions, ensuring that participants could return to their workplaces armed with new tools and ideas to implement immediately.

As the day drew to a close, it was clear that Tech Runners 2024 had succeeded in its mission to inspire, educate and foster collaboration within Malta’s tech community. The event not only provided a platform for sharing knowledge but also strengthened the bonds within the local tech ecosystem, leaving participants eager for next year’s edition.

For those who missed out, Tech Runners 2024 served as a reminder of the vibrant and growing tech scene in Malta, proving that the island is home to some of the brightest minds in the industry.
