The government is fully committed to make information technology universally accessible, not least to those who are most vulnerable in our communities.
Speaking during a first meeting with the Chairperson of the Foundation for Information Technology Accessibility (FITA) Ms Elizabeth Olivieri, Minister for Research, Innovation and the Co-ordination of Post COVID-19 Strategy Owen Bonnici stressed that the foundation will occupy an important role within the newly formed ministry.
“We look at FITA as the social arm of this ministry and we want to keep making the difference in favour of those who need assistance in society to be closer to information technology,” he said during a visit at FITA’s offices. He said that various people for a variety of reasons, including social or medical ones, feel estranged from essential tools that the advancement of technology brought about.
“Furthermore,” Minister Bonnici said, “technology can provide solution to a variety of people needing particular attention to enjoy a better quality of life.”
Ms Olivieri provided an overview of FITA’s work in recent years and explained the main targets that the Foundation set for the future.
Minister Bonnici was accompanied by Permanent Secretary Ms Joyce Dimech. He thanked the employees working with this foundation.
