There were 814,000 outbound tourists in 2023, NSO says

Total outbound tourist trips for 2023 numbered 814,005, an increase of 35.3% over 2022, The National Statistics Office (NSO) has said.

“Total nights spent by outbound tourists went up by 33.9%, surpassing 5.6 million nights. In addition, total estimated outlay by resident tourists stood at €734.8 million, 42% higher than that recorded for 2022,” it said.

The NSO also provided data for the October to December 2023 period.

During the fourth quarter, “a total of 140,554 outbound tourist trips were undertaken for holiday purposes, followed by 51,528 trips for visiting friends and relatives. Most outbound tourists were aged between 25 and 44 years (48.4%), followed by those within the 45-64 age bracket (28.6%). Outbound tourists towards EU and non-EU countries increased by 19.3 and 26.6% respectively, when compared to the same quarter of 2022. Italy remained the most popular destination, with a share of 33.3% of total tourist trips.”

Total nights spent by outbound tourists in the fourth quarter increased by 23.1%, amounting to just less than 1.5 million nights, the NSO said. “The largest share of guest nights (54.6%) was spent in non-rented accommodation establishments. The average length of stay of total outbound tourists stood at 6.8 nights.”

Total estimated expenditure by outbound tourists between October and December increased by 23.6% over the same quarter in 2022, and stood at €196.2 million, equivalent to an average €899 per capita, it said.
