The Malta Police Force and Transport Malta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding signed, which will formalise and regulate the relationship between the two entities, so that the police can have better regulated and more efficient access to available footage from Transport Malta cameras, according to a press statement by the government’s Department of Information (DOI)
The agreement also aims to ensure that privacy is protected according to the law. Currently, a total of 60 are located around Malta and Gozo
“We have always collaborated and now we are strengthening this collaboration for the common good,” said Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg. “We are currently carrying out an exercise to add more than 250 cameras around the country, cameras which will also be accessible to the police,” the minister added.
As criminality is becoming more sophisticated with time, technological advances must be utilised to keep up with the changing trends, Minister for Home Affairs and National Security Michael Farrugia said. With this agreement, technology will be used not only in the fight against criminality but also in favour of more road safety, the minister hopes.
