Business registrations reach 142,126 in 2024 – NSO

In 2024, registered business units within the statistical business register amounted to 142,126.

Registered units in Professional, scientific and technical activities (Section M) accounted for 13.9 per cent of the total registered units in 2024; Wholesale and retail trade (Section G) accounted for 12.5 per cent ; Financial and insurance activities (Section K) accounted for 11.8 per cent; and Administrative and support service activities (Section N) accounted for 7.7 per cent.

The number of registered units within Wholesale and retail trade (Section G) decreased by 1,086 units, or 5.8 per cent, when compared with 2023. Financial and insurance activities (Section K) saw a reduction of 304 units, equivalent to a 1.8 per cent decrease.  Arts, entertainment and recreation (Section R) registered an increase of 399 units, representing a 5.2 per cent rise, while Professional, scientific and technical activities (Section M) increased by 324 units, corresponding to an increase of 1.7 per cent when compared with 2023.

Most of the business units (97.2 per cent) employed between 0 to 9 persons (micro). The population of small (10 – 49) and medium (50 – 249) businesses accounted for 3,146 (2.2 per cent) and 704 (0.5 per cent) units respectively. The large businesses employing 250 and more amounted to 166 (0.1 per cent).

In 2024, 58.3 per cent of the registered units were sole owners or partnerships, 37.9 per cent were limited liability or public limited companies (Plc), while 3.7 per cent were governmental, non-profit or other types of legal organisations.

New registrations in 2024 amounted to 9,853 units, whilst deregistrations amounted to 7,039 units.
