The Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Edward Scicluna, participated in a panel discussion “COVID-19 and Debt for All” organized within the framework of the Atlantic Dialogues. This high-level forum, initiated in 2012 by the Policy Center for the New South in Morocco and the German Marshall Fund of the United States, gathers every year senior officials, business leaders, academics, opinion makers and civil society leaders from all around the world to discuss some of most relevant issues of the international agenda.

The panel discussed the debt trends around the world, the challenges that the high level of debt generated by the pandemic pose to Emerging Markets and Low-Income Countries, and the response of the international community. In his intervention, Governor Scicluna argued that “there must be a global commitment in order to see what is required because the crisis is of an enormous proportion.”

The session was moderated by John Yearwood (Global News Editor, Politico) and included Professor Ryam Ayadi, Founder and President of the Euro-Mediterranean Economists Association; and Dr Andrea Presbitero, Senior Economist of the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), together with Professor Edward Scicluna.
