The second fibre optic cable between Malta and Gozo was inaugurated on Monday by Prime Minister Robert Abela and Economy Minister Silvio Schembri.

Up until now, Gozo’s telecommunications connectivity depended only on one electric cable rented from Enemalta.

The increased demand for digital connectivity necessitated a second fibre optic cable.

The government has also established the Gozo Fibre Optic Cable Ltd to operate and maintain the link. The company succesfully concluded talks with the three local telecomms operators.

PM Abela said the investment highlights the government’s vision for Gozo; that of becoming a showcase in the switch to digital. “The fibre optic cable is only the first step,” he said.

The improved connectivity is beneficial not only for IT companies, he said, but also for the healtha, education and manufacturing sectors.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said the cable will help attract more business to the island.

Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said the investment will increase Gozo’s competitiveness and will lead to job creation.

The Minister for Energy, Entreprise and Sustainable Development, Miriam Dalli said that the business sector and other essential sectors will benefit from this investment. It will also improve quality of life.
