Malta Maritime Platform hosts conference on future and sustainability of maritime industry

The Malta Maritime Platform within the University of Malta held a conference to discuss concrete solutions to the challenges the maritime sector faces, particularly in light of climate change and technological advancement.

The conference, titled, ‘Innovation in Marine & Maritime Sustainable Developments: Research and Applications,’ brought together local and international experts, including academics, researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers, a government statement said.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett, and Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti addressed the conference.

Bonett said that sustainability and infrastructure investment are key to Malta’s maritime future.

“The future of the maritime sector depends on the decisions we take today, Malta can no longer rely solely on its natural harbours. Today’s competition requires sustainable and smart infrastructure investment,” Bonett said.

He mentioned projects like the shore-to-ship power supply system already operational in the Grand Harbour, which is also set to expand to the Freeport.

“We will continue working to provide training and recognition to all workers in the sector, including engineers, seafarers and shipyard employees, so they are prepared for technological changes and automated work,” he added.

Speaking during the conference’s first session, which focused on innovation and technology in the maritime sector, Azzopardi Tanti said that Malta’s history is intertwined with the sea, from ancient voyages and maritime trade to modern innovation and sustainability.

“Let us honour that legacy not by looking back, but by looking forward. Together, we must ensure our country’s future, and that of the oceans we share, is driven by research, shaped by innovation, and strengthened by sustainability.” Azzopardi Tanti said.

The conference addressed critical themes including the need for sustainable infrastructure, biodiversity preservation, the integration of renewable energy sources with environmental conservation, and even the safeguarding of human rights at sea.

Dialogue between scientists, engineers, policymakers and NGOs created an ideal environment for the development of coherent strategies for sustainable transformation, the statement said.

The event also underlined the importance of effective governance, civil society participation, and strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors, it said.
