Malta will host a ministerial conference among Mediterranean countries this September. The conference, which will take place in Malta, will bring together – for the first time – Mediterranean countries to begin working on a regional plan that addresses the risks resulting from sea level rise caused by climate change.
This was announced by the Minister for the Environment and Energy, Miriam Dalli, during the MED9 meeting in Slovenia, where ministers from Mediterranean EU countries gathered. Among the various themes discussed during this annual meeting were climate resilience in the Mediterranean and the ongoing efforts to make the region a hub for clean energy.
Minister Miriam Dalli stated that the Mediterranean, and therefore also Malta, is particularly facing the threats brought by the climate crisis. “Individual solutions are not enough. That is why we need regional action based on solidarity and cooperation among all countries,” said Miriam Dalli.
The Minister emphasised that MED9 countries have the potential to lead by example, but to do so, Mediterranean countries within the European Union must unite to advance the region’s reality and, at the same time, work to secure EU funding specifically for the Mediterranean.
The conference being held in September, which will be held in collaboration with the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), is intended to serve as a platform for open discussion on challenges and possible solutions. It is expected to contribute to the development of climate policies that are flexible and adapted to the unique realities of the region.
