Over 2,500 first-time buyers have applied for the €10,000 grant on a 10-year term, as announced in the Budget 2023.
These first-time buyers who have purchased a property during 2022 are eligible to apply for the grant before the end of May.
The Minister for Social Accommodation and Affordable Housing, Roderick Galdes, announced this during a press conference where he highlighted the success and impact of this measure in less than two months.
“The government’s policy in the housing sector has always faced current challenges and realities and acted according to the necessary needs,” said the Minister. He stressed that the €10,000 grant for first-time buyers is the first of many steps that the government will take in the coming years to ensure affordable accommodation. He added that “we are not just helping individuals or families pay off the property’s down payment, but we also want them to stay in the market and advance, to ensure decent and dignified housing.”
The Minister also noted that since January 1 of this year, the Housing Authority has received more than 3,250 applications from individuals from different backgrounds, who want to benefit from various schemes and services to ensure quality living.
The Housing Authority’s CEO, Matthew Zerafa, said that the authority has successfully implemented this scheme in the first few months of this year, using an efficient process that eliminates unnecessary bureaucracy while ensuring that there is no abuse. He concluded by stating that they are currently working to release the first batch of grants in June.
