WasteServ says Marsaskala green park project to go ahead after court ruling

WasteServ welcomed a Court of Appeal ruling which it says clears the way for the transformation of the Sant’ Antnin waste treatment plant in Marsaskala into a recreational green park.

“The court delivered judgment after one of the bidders – Vassallo Builders Ltd – contested the award of a tender by WasteServ to return 23,800sqm of land to the public in the company’s largest-ever greening project following the closure of the Marsaskala plant in December 2022,” WasteServ said.

The judgment by the Court of Appeal rejected all the pleas put forward by the appellant, WasteServ added.

WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca said the ruling is a significant step forward for the project following the lengthy delay caused by legal proceedings.

“This project is a cornerstone of our commitment to environmental regeneration and sustainability, and we can now fully focus on delivering on our promise to create a unique green space for the community. Full development permits are already in hand and works will start once the contract is signed in the coming days,” he said.

WasteServ said it will convert the former industrial area into natural landscaped terrain with mature trees and shrubs, with an artificial lake at the centre to attract biodiversity and “foster a serene ambiance for visitors.”

A retaining wall stretching approximately 175 metres will be installed to separate the green park from its surroundings, with three reservoirs being constructed to supply the project’s irrigation, storm water, and firefighting needs, it said.

“Part of the site will also be excavated to provide a three-storey car park offering electric park-and-ride facilities. Thirty-three per cent of the excavated material is to be re-used within the site in line with WasteServ’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy,” it continued.

Bilocca said: “Projects like the one in Marsaskala are only possible thanks to the effective implementation of waste management policies which avoid the need for more landfills and further land consumption. WasteServ remains committed to creating a better waste management infrastructure for the benefit of our natural environment and the public.”
