Visit Malta will pay €10,000 for every stage a Maltese football team advances in the qualification stages of European competitions, a government statement read.

“Over the past years, VisitMalta supported the local football teams who took part in official UEFA competitions through a financial incentive of €10,000, the government said. “For this year, the incentive will increase as every individual team has the potential to benefit from another €10,000 for every stage they advance in the respective competitions.

The teams competing are the Hamrun Spartans Football Club in the qualifications phase of the UEFA Champions League; the Birkirkara Football Club, Gżira United Football Club and Balzan Youths Football Club in the qualification phase for the EUFA Europa Conference League; and the Birkirkara women’s team in the UEFA Women Champions League.

The teams will have the VisitMalta brand on the kits they will use in the UEFA competitions.

Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo said that the incentive shows that there is nothing that can stop us from more success in sports.

“Our small size should never be a ceiling for the aspirations of Maltese sport,” he said.
